Second up is Amy Winehouse! I love her newest cd, and to be honest, the real reason I am highlighting her is because the DJ’s in my area had no idea who she was. I found that a little sad.

“I didnt want to play the jazz thing up too much again she says now, sitting in the snug of her favourite Camden boozer. Id been listening to a lot of girl-groups from the fifties and sixties. I liked the simplicity of that stuff. It just gets to the point. You can hear it on the subtley Supremes-referencing intro of Back To Black. But her reach stretches further, Amy can break loose with Aretha-style vocal stylings on Just Friends or by turning the whole idea of drying out into a gospel spiritual on the stunning opener Rehab. Which other female British singer could turn the opening line on her album - try to make me go to rehab/I say no, no, no into a churchy stomp.”

Finals are almost here! Then I’m free for the summer, woohoo!

From his website at aqualung.net:

“’This whole project has been blessed with many instances of good luck,’ says Matt Hales about Memory Man, the emotionally gripping new Aqualung album. Hales, of course, is the inhabiting spirit of Aqualung, a musical space that he creates with the help of his wife Kim Oliver, with whom he co-writes, and his brother Ben Hales, with whom he also co-writes and who plays guitar and bass. Trained on keyboards as a young child in England, Matt Hales sings Aqualung’s songs in a voice that conveys equal parts vulnerability and a cool cerebral distance.”

His new cd, “Memory Man,” is avalible on itunes now!

My favorite song from the cd - Pressure Suit

I’ll be honest - I really don’t know this band all that well. A friend of mine requested a post about them. I listened to a few clips here and there, and I liked what I heard. They released “Everything all the Time” about a year ago, and I’ve been told that they are already working on another one. Best of luck guys!

Ok. I based on all of the music I listen to lately, its official - I’m just going to have to move to Europe somewhere! Thanks to Grey’s Anatomy, I am now a fan of Irish artist Damien Rice :).

Damien Rice was born on the outskirts of Dublin in the early 70’s and grew up in Celbridge Co. Kildare. He spent much of his childhood down by the River Liffey fishing…hours of catching little left plenty of time for thinking…

Damien was also part of an act called Juniper who managed to get a big record deal with Polygram, and released “The World Is Dead” and “Weatherman”. However, all was not well. The record company put pressure on Damien to write upbeat radio friendly songs. Damien struggled and in despair one night stumbled onto to a song which became Amy. He left the band but the remains of Juniper became Bell X1.

In March 1999 he moved to Tuscany, then travelled around Europe, busking the streets. He arrived back to Dublin a year later, with a clear head, loaded with idea’s, he approached his music with a new found freshness and decided to put some songs down.

Another artist from across the pond! Because I am in no way a writer, here’s James’ words about his music:

“My Uncle used to play the guitar and watching him made me want to learn. I remember him showing me a blues riff which got me started. Id listen to tunes on the radio and try to learn to play and sing along to them. I was about thirteen at this point.

I found that singing and playing guitar was a way for me to release any frustration I had at the time. Not that I couldn’t express myself any other way, just that music has a more powerful way of doing it. I like being creative but it took me a few years of playing other people’s stuff before I could create my own style of songwriting.

I grew up on artists like Otis Redding, Al Green, Cat Stevens, The Kinks and Van Morrison. I always loved songs where the singer would sing with real soul, like they really believed in what they were singing about. Those are the kinds of songs that really stayed with me. I can’t sing a song about something I don’t believe in.”

KT Tunstall
She’s the girl most known for Black Horse and a Cherry Tree. But in my opinion, this Scottish singer/songwriter needs to be known for a bit more than that. Huh, there’s just something about the Scotts - first Paolo now KT…

“On the whole, I’m a positive, skippity-lala person,” Tunstall says of her album’s richly textured intesity, “but I’m equally facinated by the dark side of life and I always want to explore that. I think it’s an album full of positivity, but there’s stuff underneath it for sure.”

Tunstall grew up in the “beautiful but sheltered” university town of St. Andrew’s. Her parents informed her at an early age that she was adopted at birth. “I grew up knowing I could have had a million different lives,” She says. “It reminds you how mysterious life is am makes your imagination go wild.”

Marc Broussard
Marc Broussard
“Broussard’s high octane take-off uses no formula at all. Instead he offers a blend of abilities, styles and enthusiasms uniquely adapted to himself on his debut album, Carencro. He calls himself “a white boy singing soul music.” But that’s deceptive because his music draws from everything he’s absorbed. “I feel like I’ve melded a bunch of things together that people haven’t focused on for a long time.” In his songs can be heard influences and accents ranging from soul men like Stevie Wonder and Brian McKnight to Louisiana icons like Johnny Allan and G.G. Shin to road warriors like Dave Matthews.

What the 22-year old Broussard takes from all of this is a sense of craft and above all, great depth of feeling. That’s what makes him so soulful. Well, that and his husky baritone with a range similar to Wonder, or another influence, Donny Hathaway. Like them, Broussard moves up and down the scales without any sign of effort—the hard work he puts into his music isn’t meant to show. When it comes to music, Broussard is like a bayou rendition of The Natural.’ -Official Site
