Amy Winehouse June 24, 2007

Second up is Amy Winehouse! I love her newest cd, and to be honest, the real reason I am highlighting her is because the DJ’s in my area had no idea who she was. I found that a little sad.
“I didnt want to play the jazz thing up too much again she says now, sitting in the snug of her favourite Camden boozer. Id been listening to a lot of girl-groups from the fifties and sixties. I liked the simplicity of that stuff. It just gets to the point. You can hear it on the subtley Supremes-referencing intro of Back To Black. But her reach stretches further, Amy can break loose with Aretha-style vocal stylings on Just Friends or by turning the whole idea of drying out into a gospel spiritual on the stunning opener Rehab. Which other female British singer could turn the opening line on her album – try to make me go to rehab/I say no, no, no into a churchy stomp.”

It has been a little while hasn’t it? I love this next artist! His newest CD “Life in Cartoon Motion” has the most fitting title I’ve ever seen for an album. Awesomely(!) fun cd from a great new artist!
A self-taught piano virtuoso, gymnastic vocalist and born entertainer, Mika has music in his bones and at a prodigiously young age he was ready to show out and let go. Mika wasn’t hunched over a radio under his bedclothes or seduced by the glitz of “Top of the Pop’s” on the TV screen when he had his first performance awakenings. Instead, he was catapulted onto the stage of a Richard Strauss opera at 11. David Hockney was pottering around at rehearsals in the background, with models, designing the set (Mika still has the poster for the opera on his living room wall now, signed by Hockney). After near complete social exclusion at school – “I wish I could say I was a self-imposed loner but it was imposed on me” – this was a life he fell in love with, instantly:
“It was a magical world that you could live in. A parallel universe for people that is illusory and enchanting and amazing.”
His US site. His cd isn’t avalible in the states quite yet, but give it a month or so and I’m sure he’ll be on the shelves here!

Another artist from across the pond! Because I am in no way a writer, here’s James’ words about his music:
“My Uncle used to play the guitar and watching him made me want to learn. I remember him showing me a blues riff which got me started. Id listen to tunes on the radio and try to learn to play and sing along to them. I was about thirteen at this point.
I found that singing and playing guitar was a way for me to release any frustration I had at the time. Not that I couldn’t express myself any other way, just that music has a more powerful way of doing it. I like being creative but it took me a few years of playing other people’s stuff before I could create my own style of songwriting.
I grew up on artists like Otis Redding, Al Green, Cat Stevens, The Kinks and Van Morrison. I always loved songs where the singer would sing with real soul, like they really believed in what they were singing about. Those are the kinds of songs that really stayed with me. I can’t sing a song about something I don’t believe in.”

She’s the girl most known for Black Horse and a Cherry Tree. But in my opinion, this Scottish singer/songwriter needs to be known for a bit more than that. Huh, there’s just something about the Scotts – first Paolo now KT…
“On the whole, I’m a positive, skippity-lala person,” Tunstall says of her album’s richly textured intesity, “but I’m equally facinated by the dark side of life and I always want to explore that. I think it’s an album full of positivity, but there’s stuff underneath it for sure.”
Tunstall grew up in the “beautiful but sheltered” university town of St. Andrew’s. Her parents informed her at an early age that she was adopted at birth. “I grew up knowing I could have had a million different lives,” She says. “It reminds you how mysterious life is am makes your imagination go wild.”

Paolo Nutini
![]()
“Born and raised in Paisley, Scotland, Paolo Nutini is a 19-year-old singer/ songwriter blessed with a soulful, passionate voice and the natural gift of being able to tell a story in a song. Like many of the truly inspired singer/songwriters before him, Nutini has absorbed the soul of classic artist from both sides of the Atlantic and channeled it into something original, captivating, and dynamic.
Despite their Italian name, the Nutini family has lived in Paisley, Scotland for at least four generations. Paolo’s great-grandfather opened the fish and chip shop in Paisley which his parents now run. Paolo’s musical education began with his late grandfather, who introduced him to Scottish folk songs as well as a wide range of other styles.” – Glasgow Daily Record
Of course, his cd isnt avalible in the states yet – but give him about a year and I’d be he’ll be pretty big. Here’s his first single from his cd: Last Request
